Posted By Jane Ling We have a number of staff who work with people with drug addictions and I have recently been asked whether there could be any risks associated with passive smoking of substances such as heroin either long term or short term. I have done a quick search of the net but couldn't find anything relevant, any help would be much appreciated. Please note that I am only concerned with staff health from the effects of this, we have separate policies in place regarding knowledge/observation of illegal practices. Jane

Posted By Raymond Rapp Jane I have dealt with D&A issues before and to the best of my knowledge a person cannot be affected by passive inhalation of drugs. Before anyone says...'what about an opium den', I am talking about what could be realistically expected. Regards Ray

Posted By Jonathan Sandler CMIOSH Jane, For an independat view can I suggest that you approach a drugs rehabilitation clinic,if you do not smoke then why does passive smoking harm you? If the person or persons are smoking drugs of any sort then there must be effects on otherpersons, who are exposed to this.
