Posted By phil beresford If there is anyone who has been involved in the implementation of this in their own workplace and would be prepared to share their experience I would be interested to hear from you. The sorts of things I would like to know are did you start from scratch or adapt your existing system, what were the costs - obviously money but also time committment both of setting it up then maintaining it. Are there tangible benefits - were there less accidents after than before? did insurance premiums reduce? (or maybe not increace so much). Overall is it worth doing? or a "nice to have" Please e mail me direct if you prefer.

Posted By phil beresford Not exactly an overwhelming response - I thought you would all want to tell me how good (or bad) it is. Phil

Posted By Frank Hallett Phil - This lack of response doesn't necessarily mean that you're being ignored - honest! If you would like to do a search on 18001 you will find several threads that have discussed this topic in the not too distant past. It's said that a week is a long time in politics! Even a couple of days on this Forum can unfortunately end up with interesting topics being swamped and lost by the sheer volume of posts. Frank Hallett

Posted By Stupendous Man Phil, I developed a management system to OHSAS18001 at a previous employer. I found the experience from writing it from scratch very worthwhile, and the end product was a very useful tool for the organisation.

Posted By Cathy Ricketts We undertook a mock OHSAS 18001 audit - not going for the actual award but following the process - it was a good experience and showed up holes in the system - especially those that you become blind to when you have written the procedures. It highlighted the importance of senior management involvement, of being able to evidence the things that we say we do, making sure that risk assessments are prioritised and also closed when no longer relevant. It has made people outside of the direct H & S involvement think about H & S objectives and building the results of risk assessments into business planning. I like the system because it enables you to evidence continued improvement - I am still working on the action plans and our audits finished last June
