Do smoke alarms in domestic houses have to be wired in to the mains according to the new electrical regulations? Or is it just new builds or old properties that need a re wire?

what regs or act are you refering to, is the domestic property used as either rental basis or for care in the community.

No, its is a private domestic property. The mortgage company have held a retention due to the property needing a re-wire.
I need get the work passed by a compentant and registered electrician but someone has just mentioned that according to the new building regs (part P) smoke alarms need to be wired to the mains and not just battery operated. If that is the case, I think it will only count for new build or rented accommodation.

Hi, Just had a look on the net at Approved Document P but found nothing about fire alarms/detectors that stated they must be hard wired but quite a bit on alarms might be worth s read. They are available on the net through the Ofice of the Deputy Prime Minister site at the Home Office.

Believe that as part of building control new houses must have hard wired detectors but this is not retrospective for older houses.
