Does anyone have any information on the use of electric hand dryers compared to using paper hand towels or towels on a roll and any associated Health & Safety risks that may be present with their use.
We are currently using paper towels and towels on a roll and we have been asked to looking into whether we should install electric hand dryers in our multi storey building (at a fantasy island price).

There are a number of comparative reports out there. However, it depends who has commissioned them. The paper mfrs say that hot air blowers move germs and bacteria about the place whilst on the other hand paper towels have to be refilled, cause dust and mess.

If you've cleaned your hands before you dry them would any germs be blown about.
To slightly change the subject I get the heebijeebies leaving a toilet with a pull handle because no matter if you've cleaned your hands, everybody that hasn't bothered has also grabbed it. Think how contaminated that must be. Same with the lock handle on the insides of cubicles.
yUCK!

This is a clear cut issue and I think it's appeared on the forums before if you do a search.
The winner is the paper towel, especially if it's in a touch free dispenser. There is loads of legitimate university research out there on the net.
The handdryers are not so much that they blow germs around, it's just that they are so ineffective and take so long people seldom dry their hands properly, leaving a moist warm surface, which is the environment germs love.
A good toilet facility has touch free flushing, touch free soap dispensers; touch free taps; touch free paper towel dispensers, and preferably a concealed entrance/exit corridor that negates the need for a door.
If you have to have a door make sure you have a trash can next to it so people like me can throw the paper towel in that I just used to open the door with.
I do this rather than touch the same handle that the thousands of toilet users (aka Skanks) who sadly for everyone else chose not to wash their hands before they used that same handle.
Even those who do wash their hands turned on a tap with unwashed hands, and then turned the fouled tap off with the warm moist hands ....
Don't think about all this too much as it is scarey, especially when you think those who prepare your food in restaurants are probably not thinking about it (or those that design restaurants).

No, I don't have an OCD, I just think too much.

Funny. There was a report a while ago about bacterial contamination.
The telephone came out worse, with toilet door handles way down the list !

You're right, I listened, to a bacteriologist talk just the other week, your desk is dirtier than the toilet.
Strangely though, Women's toilets were much much dirtier (at the bacterial level) than the Gents.

Stephen,
Companies I have worked for have tried them all, cloth roll towels, paper rolls, paper tissues, and electric air dryers.
All have positives and negatives. The one common problem with towels whether paper or cloth, is one day they run out and there is nothing to wipe your hands on, except may be toilet paper.
My choice would be the electric hand dryer with hands free operation. The "world" make are excellent (www.worlddryer.com) The important thing is people need to wash their hands properly. Many use the hand towels to remove the dirt.
Speed of drying with a hot air hand dryer, to me is not a problem. You don't get problems with paper towels all over the floor, full waste bins, blocked toilets etc.
As far as germs on handles, etc, I don't want to go there.
As some one has already said in other threads, where aren't there any germs?
No wonder we get bad press.

is the answer to have hospital type hand sterilising gel just outside the toilet door so it is the last thing anyone uses.It would need to be dispensed by some non touch method perhaps by breaking a light beam.
Has anyone got a COSHH assessment, MSDS and/or RA sheet for the gel???????????
Does it make floors slippery if spilt?????????
Lets not bother

Over the years, we have had all variants.
The losers were the eletric hand drier and paper towel rolls.
We use the "centre pull" paper towels and the "tissue" type paper sheets.
There are NO lids on the waste bins - no excuse for not getting the used towel in the bin and no excuses for the cleaners either.
Where people have significantly whined, we supply the turkish towels, but these tend not to be used as they quickly get wet.
If you do go down the electric hand drier, try to buy rather than rent. after all, if its a quality product, it should give years of fault free service?!
regards Fred

From a personal point of view I prefer the roller hand towels. I believe they are more efficient, produce no waste and do what they are actually meant to do right first time. A good integrated management system solution to safety, quality and Environment.
