Posted By RP Whilst this can be done, it does prove impractical at times. Consider using a different chuck without the protusions on it. A hood guard can be used, but needs to be retro fitted by way of a hinge fitting.

Posted By Patrick Burns CMIOSH - SpDipEM - MIQA Whilst reviewing our workshop machinery risk assessments several years back I found that various improvements were required to Comply with PUWER. For the lathe a new chuck guard was fitted with an interlock limit switch that stops the machine if the chuck guard is moved from the cover position. The switch cannot be overridden. There is a booklet titled safebook2 (Machinery safety) using prosafe interlock systems. Try Sigma Controls Ltd 01942 522211.
