Hazardous Substances [ADR & IMDG] and Environmental Management

Posted By Frank Hallett I never cease to be surprised at the wealth of really useful information that flows through this Forum.
So - Do any of you know of any courses [at any level] that bring together the management of ADR/IMDG type substances and related Environmental issues?
If so, please let me know.
Do not tell me about the DGSA - it doesn't meet the need.

Posted By Chris Hayward Dear Frank Since the codes you mention (and IATA) are designed to aid prevention of the discharge of all transport classes (1-9) into the environment, I assume you want to know what they do when they get there and how to mitigate the effects? Try the Chemical Hazard Communication Society. They may do a course that fills the niche. www.chcs.org.uk. Some countries, Canada springs to mind, insist that purveyors of such materials have an emergency plan (beyond the normal TREM card provision), so presumably there are courses. I know there are symposiums on pollution of harbours etc as I have been sent invites to them before now. Try the UNECE (www.unece.org) or IMO (www.imo.org) sites and navigate through the fog. However classification under ADR/IMDG or IATA codes isn't the only arbiter of whether a compound is an environmental pollutant, so not sure why these are the focus of your deliberations. Kind regards Chris

Posted By Frank Hallett Thanks for the pointers Chris.
My need relates to the storage of goods to which ADR/IMDG apply.

Posted By Mr T Storage of these Products may incur COMAH, you can bring up the requirements of these regs on the HSE website, if the volumes don't incur COMAH you may be able to identify suitable training from www.trainingpages.com

Posted By Paul Cockaday Frank,
I'm not aware of any specific courses relating to your request, however, my experience in waste and environmental management tells me that your answer to the determination of the relationship between materials containing dangerous substances (i.e those covered by the Dangerous Substances Directive and reproduced in CHIP and the ASL) and management of environmental risk is contained in the Environment Agency technical document WM2 contained on their website. This document defines the relationship between safety risk phrases and the 14 hazardous properties defined within the hazardous waste directive and the hazardous waste regulations together with threshold concentrations for a number of the 14 hazardous properties. The relationship between compounds containing more than one of the environmental risk phrases and threshold concentrations for the determination of hazardous waste is complex, as you will note by refering to the document. In addition, the requirements for the consignment information relating to hazardous waste is broadly similar to the that of hazardous substances under the ADR.
Trust this brief note gives you a step in the right direction.

Posted By Stupendous Man Frank,
Do you require information on the storage of substances that have been packaged for transport, or is the packing yet to take place?

Posted By Frank Hallett Paul - many thanks for the additional pointer, it has real value.
Stupendous - technically the goods remain packaged [compliant with CHIP]; it's about sourcing a suitable training event that brings together the relevant aspects of ADR, on-site Dangerous goods, Environmental issues and all the other stuff that arises 'cos of the dangerous goods on site.
Any relevant info would be greatly appreciated.
