Help please! I'm drowning under a sea of terms, definitions, requirements, inputs, outputs..........and my deadline for our 18001 make or break audit is rapidly approaching (Thursday).
Can anyone get me started with some objectives? We are a small organisation (2 offices, 30 employees, very very few accidents which are usually of a very minor nature).
Thanks Helen

Objectives don't have to be immediately measurable like reducing accidents, they can be strategic as well. What about setting up a system of monthly inspections, reviewing 8% of your risk assessments per month, conducting DSE assessments of all work stations etc.

Helen,
Think of where the company is at present, and think of where you would like it to be next year, in 2 years and in 5 years time and then set objectives towards achieving those goals. This can be anything from "reducing the number of workplace fatalities by 50%" to "providing 50% of the workplace with wrist wrests for keyboard use". Depends on the business and the risks.

The problem from an auditors point of view is that some of the types of actions you suggest are part of the standard, they are not therefore valid objectives as such. One cannot make it an objective to comply with the requirements of a standard.

You have left it a bit late:-)
If you email me this lunchtime we could talk further. The safety policy should already have broad objectives contained within it, these will be something like
Exceeding legal requirements sfarp.
Budget allocations
Training Plans
Care of the public
Primacy of employee H&S
Whilst the specification does not clearly state the need you will need to develop SMART targets against some or all of the policy objectives;
eg
Achieve a 20% reduction in Reportable accidents
Achieve a 30% increase in Near Miss reporting
Develop new electronic AR system
All of these should be aimed at improving the current level.
Train 75% of staff to use Fire Extinguishers
Do not use such terms as "To ensure all accidents are reported" All of these need to be set out in a programme Giving the What, When, Who, How, When etc.

Thankyou all for the advice - much appreciated.
However, it would appear that I have offended someone who has made a complaint that I am obtaining information to sell to a client.
I can assure you that I am not advising any client on any aspect of 18001 (or 14001 or 9001 or anything similar). This BSI stuff is a complete mystery to me and all I am doing is helping out my boss so we can abtain accreditation.
I work for a company called CSTS Ltd (Confined Spaces Training Services) and well, the company name describes exactly what we do. For proof, www.csts.co.uk !
Sorry to have offended and thanks again to those who replied to my post.
