Can anyone tell me whether there is a specific clearance distance required under automatic fire sprinkler heads? US guidance states 18 inches...is there similar guidance in the UK, and if so where is this stated? Thanks...

There are two co-existing British Standards on the design, specification and installation of sprinkler systems. They merge in Sept 2007.
BS EN 12845
BS5306 part 2.
This doesn't exactly answer your question (sorry), but I am sure it must state something in there, and someone out there will have access to the contents and let you know.

Otherwise, why not give a Fire Safety Officer at your local Fire brigade a call, they are normally quite helpful little anoraks in my experience!

I would recommend that you contact your insurance company; they have fire safety engineers as part of their auditing team who will give you the advice you need. There are many governing rules, type of products stored, spaces between rows of product, type of sprinkler system etc. etc. Unfortunately it is not just height below sprinkler heads, 15 years of dealing with insurance company inspections has taught me this. If you get it wrong and have a fire your insurance company will be checking that your storage was to the right specification, get them on your side now.
