Hi all,
I would like to ask for advice & help (if possible), in OHSAS 18001 Certification related issues:
1- What are the suitable means i may use to convince a manger of a public (government owned) power station (that not seeking profit) about the role/benefits that OHSMS/OHSAS 18001 can add to business? (any suggestion, points to be considered &/or presentation - taking into account that i am talking about not well - H&S - regulated area, i mean i can not use the stick of the consequences of non-copmliance with law).
2- As I have no OHASA 18001 & 18002 dcouments, can i use HSG-65 model to develop an OHSMS that will be compatible with the certification requirements or i have to adhered to OHSAS 18001/18002.
Thanks and any response, much appreciated
Regards
Amjad

The first thing to do is to get your hands on the document itself. Just using HSG (65) won't hit the spot the models used aren't the same and you risk confusing yourself and everyone else. It only costs £35 and can be ordered on-line, don't worry if the computer tells you that you owe them £70 its a fault and they are trying to fix it - you will only be charged £35.
Using the cost of accidents - whether or not there is a legal sanction involved is perfectly valid, so work out what accidents are costing them and what it is taking off the bottom line. Also stress the importance of management control - they wouldn't dream of not exercising management control over any other part of the business so why aren't they doing so with H&S. What are the current costs of personal injury claims? There may not be fines involved but believe me claims cost, whether or not you have EL insurance. What about the affects of having key people off with injuries? Damage to expensive plant due to inadequate training? I'm sure that there are loads of cost saving areas if you think about it.
Then there are the moral grounds - a bit more intangible but no-one likes to think that they may not go home in the same state as they arrived in the morning, or that someone else may not be going home due to their actions or inactions.
If I think of anything more I'll post again.

Sorry to be pedantic Helen but turn it around - is it immoral to not have OHASA 18001 then? That's how it reads to me.
