Posted By Debbie S We are just about to have our Company Health & Safety Policy re-signed as the Director responsible is leaving the Company. During this process I woul like to change the Statement in the front as I feel its a bit wooly and does not mention board/ director / chairman committment. Basically its says 'it is the policy of the Company to do all that is reasonably practicable to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of the emloyees at all its workplaces by provision of the necessary organisation, training, supervision and appropriate equipment....' Then goes onto HASAW etc. I would like to change the Company bit at the top to 'It is the policy of the Chairman, Directors and Board Members of the Company....' I feel that this is a firmer statement of the Comapnies committment on Health & Safety and involves the 4 other Directors in the Company who don't want to sign the statement as they feel its not their responsibility (have printed off 'Directors Responsibilty' from HSE website) Your comments are appreciated. Posted By Nick House I would suggest that as long as you mention one director by title, it is irrelevant as to whether you mention the others in the statement of intent, as long as you make them aware of their responsibilities. Ultimately it is the 'controlling mind' that the buck stops with, and they should be nominating other directors to take responsibility for ensuring that their own areas are covered, acting on behalf of the 'controlling mind'. Others on the forum may well be able to put it more concisely than that though...

Posted By Mark Talbot Debbie, if your Chairman is a familiar name, use his proper name as well as a Director's. One of the main ideas of this statement is to get the employee aware that H&S is seen as important enough to get personal about. Often, middle management hijack H&S and presume to lessen its importance in favour of delivery and cost. Making it clear that the highest people hold a personal interest in it, as you are suggesting, is a very good move.

Posted By Ciaran McAleenan Debbie Have a look at this. Ciaran 1. is committed to the pursuit of good management practices in every aspect of its business and as such we apply our H&S management with sincerity, integrating it fully into our strategic planning process. 2. We fully accept our responsibilities towards our workforce, customers and others who may be affected by our activities. We will endeavour to eliminate accidents and lost time incidents from our workplace. 3. While the Director of is appointed as the H&S director, members of the Board and senior managers accept their specific responsibility to provide H&S leadership. 4. As well as complying with statutory H&S obligations our management arrangements conform to international best practice as a way of ensuring that the highest standards of H&S integrate with our business performance. 5. recognises that safe delivery of its works programs require employee competence, the availability of sufficient resources and the delegation of authority to take appropriate actions to safeguard the operation. Competence is defined as the consistent application of skills and knowledge. 6. We promote co-operation and communication across the and between competent management and staff at all levels using team meetings, management meetings, Whitley committees, local consultative committees and specially constituted groups, as necessary. 7. The Board is kept informed of relevant H&S management issues as they happen and through quarterly reports and the annual audit program. Employees 1. employees must be familiar with H&S management arrangements that apply to their own work activities. 2. views accidents as control failures. Employees must therefore comply with the operational safety control measures put in place to ensure that working conditions are safe and healthy. Adoption The Board has adopted this policy statement together with the associated safety management and safe working procedures.
