Good morning!
I am currently advising a construction company in central Manchester. Basically, during excavations to create a Piling Mat they have discovered a relatively large sewage pipe. It did not show up on any service plans, and the utility company has no knowledge of it.
They obviously need to track it's path across site, and may need to work on it in some manner.
However, ownership of the pipe is unknown. It may even be an ancient pipe that pre-dates official records. I would like to know if there are any methods that can be employed to trace ownership of the pipe to see if it is still used etc, and to establish liability for any costs incurred with regard to accidental damage, repairs, rerouting etc if necessary?
Any pointers would be appreciated - I did a search in the forums but couldn't find anybody with a similar issue.
Kind regards Ian

Services surveys do not simply mean getting the Service Drawings. You really needed a competent survey company to do this - the costs are trivial compared to even a small hit.- circa £600 - £1000 per day.
They will also trace this pipe for you if you commission them. Once you have established where it goes then ownership can become clearer. If it is a live sewer it will be owned by the utility company - it is simply one that has not been maintained from time immemorial, the records may have been lost even though it still functions.
Other possibilities may be an internal factory culvert from a previous site use.

Hi Bob,
Thank you for the quick response.
The company wants to pursue the professional surveying company route suggested by you.
Has anybody used a company they can recommend that is prepared to undertake work in the Manchester area?
If not, what sort of search title would you recommend in the press or search engine?
Thanks, Ian
