Whilst I have read a few in depth definitions and explanations of the title subject, I am still not absolutely sure of what it means and how it can be applied in the UK. Could someone please explain in laymans terms?
I thank you in anticipation of your help.

Alan,
Basically the employer is responsible for any loss injury or damage caused by caused by an employee in the course of his work duties but not on a "frolic" of his own.
For example if he is carrying a scaffold pole for a scaffold he is about to erect as part of his job and accidently whacks someone around the the head the employer is liable, however if he is "borrowing" the scaffold pole for his own purposes and does the same then the employer is not liable.
