Posted By David Dear All, Does anyone have a view on an issue which we have come across recently where any employee who wears prescription glasses turned up to work without their glasses on. Later that day they had an accident where they misplaced some items which fell on their shoulder. The accident investigation concluded as well as other factors that a contributory factor to the accident was that the employee did not have clear vision because he did not have his glasses on at the time. An action was for the employee to wear his glasses or lenses whilst at work. Can such a request be placed on an employee and what action can be taken if they turn up to work without their glasses again. The environment is a warehouse with typical hazards such as use of ladders, moving vehicles etc. I would appreciate your views points on this one as a means of clarification. Kind Regards.

Posted By TBC It could be argued of course that the employees is in breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act below: General duties of employees at work. 7. It shall be the duty of every employee while at work (A) to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work. =========================================================== Depending on the full circumstances and if the employee is to blame - you could give the employee a verbal warning this time and ensure they have the specs with them at all times. It could even mean going home for them if they forget they again. It could have been worse though someone could have been seriously injured.
