Posted By PETER GANNAWAY Can anyone who manages safety in a warehousing tell me how they meet the requirement under the Welfare Regs to provide a comfortable thermal environment without the need to provide specialist clothing against heating the entire warehouse to 16 or 13 degrees when the cost of energy is going through the roof. A proposal is to reduce heating but provide warm clothing. The temperature is caused not by process but by having decades old buildings, with roller doors which let out what heat there is, whenever opened, meaning the heaters working harder. Does the increasing cost of energy change the quantum of risk in SFARP as the cost of heating is going up, so the requirement to provide direct heating deminishes. Any thoughts?

Posted By marcus Peter We have just experienced the same problem, because one of our warehouses is a very old building and almost impossible to maintain 16 degrees in winter (due to do doors constantly being open and the construction of the building)we have concentratated putting heating in office and rest areas and supplied the staff with additional clothing. We have experienced no problems with this route and have not incurred any comment following a recent HSE visit. Our insurance company is more than happy having reduced fire risk from heating within the main warehouse areas.
