I have recently employed a few people to carry out some cleaning and painting activies within a large pre cast factory. We use cab/ and remote control cranes. These people employed will need to paint the ladders of these cranes (10). What would be the safest way to go up and down these ladders and painting them. Would you think a harness should be worn, if so with a lanyard or a restrictor?

Have you carried out your Risk Assessment Tani.
without being able to see the ladders or their design, have they got ladder loops? how high are they? etc. Falls from height is a major hazard in all industries, therefore control measures such as providing fall arresters, harnesses etc should be considered and applied. dont forget to start at the top and work down, dont want sticky feet or 'trapped in the corner of the room while painting the floor syndrome'.

Hi Tani, do you need to paint the ladders?( slippery or could hide damage or corrosion)how long are these contractors going to be at work?what are the consequences if they fell while carrying out the task? Are these sub contractors? if so they should have provided a risk assessment which would have identified the right piece of access / egress equipment as a control measure, if you think the equipment is not the right sort liase with them before commencing work. This should have been sorted out at before the contract was awarded.Follow the hierachy for work at height.

The ladders do have rings and around 10 metres high, they have been painted before so its a case of going over the paint after so many years. Yes i have a risk assessment completed for them, but didnt know what was the best way to go round this, because i could also get them to carry out the task from a cherry picker or scaffold, which could reduce the risk. As for health and safety being considered before the contract set up, i only was given 2 days to prepare for an induction for them covering ladders, COSHH, etc...2 days.
