There's a discount for bulk orders remember; for all those hard to buy for friends and family, imagine their little faces lighting up with delight at the stylish driver's hammer, with concealed safety blade,

Its a bit early I know - but that's my Christmas prezzie list sorted out for this year......NOT
Look really smart down the pub - an IOSH fleece & tie.....
Don't think I could stand the p*** taking from everyone - I have a pretty thick skin on most things, but this would be a step too far.
No orders from me I'm afraid.

Have to agree about the ties, which are quite subdued - though I'm glad I'm not a FIOSH 'cos red just doesn't suit me...
Thought the class 2 laser, ballpen, stylus and light was clever - now if only it was also a wireless presenter, so I could use it to inflict death by PowerPoint, my life would be complete!

Interesting....
I think was mislead by the first sentence in the catalouge either the stylish or indeed range also i think they may stick out like a sore thumb rather than stand out from the crowd
At least they are trying good luck!

It's true, they are trying, and we shouldn't knock them; they are just trying to raise a bit of dosh for the Institution and help keep our fees down (I got the dreaded envelope today; Ouch!).
What about an Elise in IOSH colours? For all those doing very nicely on the salaries thread in the careers forum,

Just what are IOSH doing with our hard earned membership fees. The management appear to be locked in an ivory tower doing what they want to do, and not actually doing anything for the benefit of the mebership. Pens, safety knives and ties should hardly be the major priorities for our professional body, should they? Either IOSH or I are completely out of touch with what is actually needed. They seem to be making lots of decisions that have little or no effect on my (our?) working life, and just add to the image of the safety professional being a pompous buffoon out of touch with reality.
Corporate membership - will mean absolutely nothing to my company's managers.
Gifts for me to give out at training session - I'd be laughed out of town.
Salaries for H&S staff with a PhD being >£50K - please return to the real world.
The most points available in CPD to be gained from attending branch meetings - of very very limited use.
10% of CPD to be gaiuned by writing a "plan" - absolutely worthless.
The view that safety professionals will be listened to more in their companies because IOSH say so - derisive.
The complete lack of a sense of humour on any subject - again reinforces the stereotype of the H&S Officer.
The preaching nature of letters on smoking bans and the continuing treatment of people as sheep to be prodded and led to the promised land of no risk.
The hundreds of emails and wasted junk mailshots about the conference.
The continued harping about what is best for IOSH not what is best for their members.
The royal charter and corporate image being the only thing that IOSH seem to striving towards.
As you may have guessed, I will not be buying gifts. I only continue as a member as I need the letters after my name. I have responded to IOSH's questionnaires.
Anyway, I think I've calmed down now.

Dear Jonathan
You're quite right in saying that “pens, safety knives and ties” shouldn't be major priorities for IOSH - and they aren't. It is, however, quite normal for a membership body to offer a range of branded merchandise to its members. Naturally, the range is not funded from membership subscriptions.
Before we selected the items you see in the leaflet, we asked a number of members for ideas and feedback. What you see here is what was asked for by members. It's also worth noting that our corporate gifts have been on sale now for nearly a year, available at events, and we've had a fantastic response.
As you have strong feelings on a number of matters not related to this thread, can I suggest you write to us formally with your concerns - we can then take on board your comments and respond to you as appropriate.
Thank you.

Caroline,
Thank you for the response. I may just write to you later. If there has been such a good response to the merchandise and the focus of IOSH, then it may be that I, rather than IOSH, am out of touch with the majority of H&S practictioners. If that is so, then I accept that I represent no-one but myself, and withdraw my comments.

Jonothan, I don't think you are out of touch and your comments are valid, as for writing to IOSH, myself and others have done that for what it was worth, similar replies on an elecronically signed letter (would it have hurt to actually read it and sign it properly before it went out??).

Have just had a look at the brochure, out of all of them the chartered members tie looks the smartest. The other look a bit 'grotty' for want of a better describtion.

Jonathan - agree with your first post, no need to withdraw your comments.
As with you, I'm only a member for the 'letters' and hence improved job prospects.
Had a couple of posting withdrawn yesterday, because of a gentle jibe at people in a certain part of the country (where I live) - deemed to contravene the acceptable use guidelines (see 'Salaries for Safety Practitioners' or whatever the title was.

Jonathan, I agree with your comments on the merchandise, I wonder how much effort went into preparing the catalogue, sourcing all the goods? Surely IOSH have got far more work on health and safety issues to be dealing with? As for membership I to am only a member for the letters after my name

I bet you're glad you got that off your chest.
I wouldn't worry about the sniffy replies from IOSH if I were you.
I bet the people who responded to the corporate merchandise survey were the same ones that were devastated to receive a certificate with a hole in it (caused by the really stylish badge)last year. Probably the same people who were desperate to ensure that the ties were different colours for each grade of membership in order to emphasise their status and probably the same people who think that it is a matter of life and death to get a practice certificate.
You carry on mate, you gave me a chuckle at least.

It just goes to show that people who have observed that the ties look like the seventies are, i believe upto date and modern. Where as iosh seems a bit behind the times in image. I'm sure they give these ties away free as gifts to guest speakers etc

I think we know where this is going, it's a shame there's always a slagging match
There's nothing wrong with trying to make a few extra squid here and there, if you don't like it don't buy it the sales will speak for themselves. My conceren is the cost of some of the stuff, and the fact that you have to do two years IPD to get a tie. The pocket driver bits will come in handy ....... for something
Like I said before good luck

So cruel! Some of the items (pens mugs etc) look OK.
However, who in the real world would wear an IOSH lapel badge? Tie even........
I do notice at gatherings of the clan H&S that most people are grey suited males with no dress sense.......mostly much nearer to pension age than 21. Still it fits well with our poplular image as humourless jobsworths whose aim in life is to ban conkers from schools and risk assess EVERYTHING.

I don't really have a problem with people wanting to wear ties, pin badges etc. but (with reference to an earlier thread) it isn't going to make H&S more rock 'n roll. What about IOSH hoodies, beanie hats, pint glasses, guitar plectrums etc!!

Caroline Brookes (Head of Publishing) posted a reponse on this Thread on 15 March and invited those that had concerns to "write to us formally with your concerns - we can then take on board your comments and respond to you as appropriate."
On that invitation the Moderators now belive that there is no further benefit to be had in leaving this thread open; it has now been locked.
