Hello
I have to do a presentation in Northern Ireland this week on 'basic HS awareness'.
Just so I dont look too stupid, can anyone let me know of the main legislative differences with NI as opposed to the main land. Does hswa74 still apply, does the HSE exist in NI?, are the regs pretty much the same as here? etc
thanks

The main legislation in Northern Ireland is the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978. The order is quite similar to the Act regarding responsibilities etc. The equivelent of HSE is HSE(NI)who have a good website where you can examine all of the legislation in place.

As we are all "european brothers" the legislation is a regurgitation of the H&S '74 act from what I can gather.
Stick to the principles of the '74 act, the H&S at Work (NI) Order 1978, risk assessment and all the usual type of things and you should be fine.
Great place btw, Northern Ireland, Belfast is brilliant and so are the people.

For your future info; Try the HSA website at http://www.hsa.ie/publis...=3e301491461142951242296 and http://www.hseni.gov.uk/about.cfm according to which region your sited in. There is a 'new' SHAW 2005 act in place in that is worded similar to ours across here albeit simplier (god I wish our legal eagles could do this, but they have a precedence and job to maintain). Many irish places take HSE very loosely so go careful, after all many see fatalities in the paper all the time.

Ignore the HSA website - it is a Southern Ireland thing. Concentrate on the N. Ireland stuff like HSE(NI.
