A local playgroup has asked for advice on cleaning products/regimes or tratments to stop the decking becoming like an ice rink in damp weather. Any advice (no they can't rip it up)?

Not ideal but i have come across some places where they cover it with chicken wire. It seems to work but i've not really thought about any related dangers

What about some form of slip resistant paint?
Watco do this sort of thing (though you might be able to source it cheaper).
Granted, if it is coloured paint - it may spoil the overall look of the decking, but it might be available as a clear varnish with added grit.
Alternativly, narrow grooves could be cut across the decking, but I suspect that these would not remain effective for long and may increase the possibility of splinters in kids fingers.

I think you can get adhesive pads that are mostly used for treads of stairs but are very like large strips of sandpaper but obviously not as rough.

Robert - It will depend on the timber and whether it has previously been treated with anything. Get back to the supplier to ask for recommended care/maintenance products - it may just need a pressure wash.

I had this problem with decking at home,it was literally like an ice rink. I used a product called Algon. You dilute it with water and pour over the decking. Within a few days it had cleared all of the slime off the decking and a couple of months on it is still not a bit slippery. It says child and pet friendly on the container too, so should be o.k to use in a playground area.
