We are carrying out large excavation works on our clients site for a project. We did not really realise this work was going to take place. We need our personnel trained to identify underground cables, pipes etc. Would anyone have an idea of any company who would carry out training for identifying this in the Rotherham (Yorkshire) area.

Take a deep breath and invite in the experts. Unless you are experienced in using the kit properly you are still likely to have a significant number of failures, ie pipes particularly can be missed unless you can locate suitable places to clamp them with the genny.
The specialists can find both metal and non-metal with a wide range of techniques and their cost are low compared to even a small hit!
I will not even go into the statement about not knowing the work was going to take place. If it was that unplanned it needs planning now.

I work under a health and safety manager and so was recently told that there will be this problem and need to organise training for these. As for a professional company, would you have any ideas?

I think the CDM Regulations will definitely have something to say about this. If there are outside contractors coming on to carry out the type of work being described here then the attitude your company has of not keeping you informed of major health and Safety related incidents is not on - see your other threads. I think your Health and Safety 'manager' shouldn't be throwing things like this at you. These issues should have been sorted out weeks, if not months ago. Have the other major hazards of excavation work been as inadequately addressed? I sincerely hope not.
