Posted By jackw. Hi some assistance from anyone, who has experience of this type of chair, used for taking disabled persons up/down stairs. In this instance down 12 internal stairs to the door of the flat, turned through 90 degrees and taken down an additional 6 steps to ground level. I observed staff using this chair today and have concerns re the load placed on their back/trunk when moving the chair into position to start the decline/ climb, during both tasks and, when turning the chair with the client in it through 90 degrees in a very tight space. I also discovered by accident that if you release your grip on the chair it does not appear to lock onto the stairmay tumble down the stairs. Any comment, experience etc. would be very welcome

Posted By Bob Shillabeer It sounds as if your in line for a visit from the HSE, local environmental health office and the local fire enforcing authority. BIG TROUBLE. Get rid of the chair and get a more suitable system. When you say 12 stairs is this 12 flights or just 12 steps? I guess the 12 flights means you have a lift so why not use it or if not what does your evacuation process say. What manual handling assessments have you done? Yea! just get rid of it. Bob.

Posted By Lynne Ratcliffe Residential or workplace? seek advice from DRC as to suitability of that particular chair for your particular purpose. Unfortunately 'Get Rid' may not be a constructive suggestion.
