Posted By david cairns Hi folks, Hope you can help! I have a presentation to make, ONLY to the HSE :( and senior key members of the client’s board. Looking for a few pointers on what i should cover. I have included a brief overview of the site and current progress to date. Man-hours, number of staff, persons inducted, accidents, etc. (this presentation is 10-15 mins long and only on H&S. What else should I cover??? Your help is most welcome. Dingbat

Posted By RP What type of site is it. Include your strategy on compliance with the Management Regs, check HSE site and cover ground they are interested in. Do not worry about HSE being there, they are just pleased that you are doing something. And do not feed bull****.

Posted By gham or the otherway round Try keeping it to 15 mins, and really check everything before you deliver it, making sure that you have no information in that shouldn't be made public knowledge

Posted By Stuart C Think RP has got it spot on, Show what you've done and those areas which are being addressed - if you show that risks on the site have been identified and being addressed in a prioritised manned they will be happy

Posted By Merv Newman What is your proactive programme for 2006 ? One slide will do. And relax. This is your chance to shine and to show how great, interesting, fun and just plain gorgeously sexy Health And Safety At Work can be. If you have prepared the presentation all on your only-o (without asking for tooo much help) then you will know it forwards and back and will be able to (intelligently) answer any questions. That alone can be really impressive. Especially if your job, or a future job, is on the line-eo For all out there - if you have a 10, 15, 30 minutes presentation or a 4 hour, 1 day, 3 day training session to build, do-it-yourself is best. Do your research, plagiarise ideas, Rob All My Comrades (Royal Army Medical Corps, as opposed to Royal Engineers - Rob Everybody and Royal Artillery (dad was a bombardier) Rob Anyone) sorry about that digression. back to the plot. Do your research then think. What is essential, minimum information to get over ? How do I do it so that they actually do get it ? (thinks : how do I know that they have got it ? Watch the body language)What are the fewest words I need to put on the wall ? What are the fewest words I need to actually say ? Even with more modern video projectors I find that the paperboard helps to emphasise/clarify/enlarge on some key points. But that can/should seem to be improvised. And therefore rehearsed. In a longer presentation you may also need laugh points, coffee breaks, pauses for thought-full introspection (managers ? Oh yeah) and pee breaks (usually coincide with coffee breaks (input matches output)) First time I had to make such a presentation I sounded like a castrati. Nowadays, I'll kick anyone's ass. In a real deep growling voice. If I want to. Stay cool. Keep control. It's a FUN JOB ! innit ? innit ? Merv

Posted By Merv Newman A number of very interesting (ie right dodgy) ripostes/similes/metaphores came instantly (almost) to mind but, wary as always of the moderators (shouldn't it be minotaurs - breakers of the thread ? And I think theseus's dad's reaction to a few grubby sails was a bit OTT) I will keep them to myself (full answers supplied to private e-mails) Just - don't you get a real thrill when you KNOW that you have finally convinced a manager ? Or when trainees depart with that DETERMINED look in their eyes ? Or when a contractor says "Your right ! What a brilliant idea !" And you think - "now, let's smoke a cigarette together ?" (cup of tea for the non-smokers) Maybe it's not quite as good as the real thing, but on a long trip away from home, it helps. Merv (still waiting for that contract. I think she's gone home)

Posted By Frank Hallett You could always have a trawl through the HSE site and present your corporate version of "How we make sense of H&S"! Depends on what your organisdation has done recently [within last last available records range] and how secure you think your job is though. Frank Hallett
