Posted By micklecats Anyone got any ideas on this one? I have a guy on the shop floor who has Noise Induced Hearing Loss diagnosed by our health surveillance team. He has been referred to his GP and then to the local hospital for tests. They tell him he is susceptible to high levels of noise, presumably he has sensitive hair cells in his cochlea. He did tell them that we have a noise policy and that he wears his kit. He has worked here for 20 months and wears his hearing protection all day. I don’t know what his leisure habits are (music, amateur pneumatic drill user) as it is early days. The hospital says that he should change employer or change to a quieter area within our premises to safeguard his hearing. The noise levels at his work station are about 87dBa, with his laser lights in this will be reduced to well below the new first action level of 80dBa (I would expect). I am working on an ongoing noise reduction plan, where we are replacing grinders with new equipment which is much quieter than the existing stuff, but is there anything else I can do for the guy? We have no opportunities for him in a quieter area, he is a good guy and I would rather keep him. Is there anyone out there who has heard of this kind of thing before? Perhaps you could let me know if there is anything else I can do. Thanks.

Posted By erina That again proofs the point of having pre-employment medicals done on all employees within 24 hours of starting employment...You do not mention his previous employment history...in this case you will have to clear out his prev. work history as well as what he does after hours. Did he have an exit medical done at previous employer..if after all these rulings have been made,,and the hearing loss is due to his current job....you will have to have a hearing test done before shift and after shift with ppe and without ppe toe determine if the ppe is effective enough for the noise levels metered...sometimes these ppe's do not fir properly..if you want to discuss some options with me just contact me..I am an Industrial Audiometrist QUALIFIED!!!!
