Posted By Smiff We are having a site cleared by a demo contractor, part of which contains a double garage with an ACM roof which is in excellent condition. Another contractor on the site has asked if he can have the garage to take away to his premises for his own use. I believe he's not allowed to re-fit the ACM sheets in a different premises, and we will advise him of this by letter and that we've surveyed and identified ACM. Is there any other reason why he should re-use the remainder of the structure (standard steel and pre-cast panels)?

Posted By Peter MacDonald Smiff It is not permitted to re-use the panels but no reason why he can't re-use the building. Many buildings have the ACM removed and a new roof put on. I have even seen ACM roofs being clad over rather than removed so the structure itself should be OK. I'm assuming of course that we are talking about cement panels? It may be prudent given the condition of the panels to give the dismantled structure a clean down though. You don't want to be passing ACM debris onto another site. One thing to consider is that dismantling for re-use as opposed to demolition has fundamentally different hazards as the structure needs to be reverse constructed and it is not possible to avoid working at height. For example working from a scaffold/MEWP to remove purlins (dismantling) or wrecking the whole building from ground level with a excavator on powerfork (demolition). Hope this helps Peter
