Posted By jay2005 Hi there, have to measure CO2 and 02 exhause gaes from a fermentation process. Can anyone firstly confirm is there is a legal requirement to do this, also if anyone else is currently doing this, which is better, Mass Spec or Photo Acoustic Gas Detector. Thank you,

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Are the Confined Space Regs. relevant to your situation? If so, they would require atmospheric testing if oxygen levels could be depressed. For measurement, mass spec sounds a bit OTT as I wouldn't have thought you would need high precision. There are many gas detectors that should be suitable, including personal alarms for thos working in the area. Paul

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Jay Are the gases discharged into an enclosed are? If "yes"; you should apply the Confined Spaces Regs for all work activities. If "no" because you use an enclosed flue system to discharge to atmosphere you will only need to consider the CS Regs for maintenance. If you need further clarification; please feel able to contact me direct - this is stuff I do. Frank Hallett
