Posted By Paul Leadbetter One of my clients is a small-scale manufacturer of water and solvent based paints. Can anyone give me any guidance on how often the fixed electrical equipment should be tested or tell me where to find the information? The HSE and BCF sites do not contain the info I am looking for. Paul

Posted By Telstar BS7671 & Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. look at the sections on periodic inspection & testing & talk to your senior maintenance guys first to see if you are doing, or can do what is required yourself, before you go external.

Posted By Helen Horton Hi Paul Depending on liklihood of damage/contamination with water or potential to cause an ignition I would say annually for this type of equipment based on what we used to do when I worked for a paint maker. You might also get some useful advice from the company's property insurer as they will also have a view as to what they would like to see in order to mitigate the potential for claims.

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Thanks for the responses so far. I have taken the plunge and bought a copy of BS7671 (£94!) only to discover it is no help at all. It merely states that the frequency of inspection and testing depends on the type of installation, its use, etc. Can anyone confirm Helen's response about annual inspection and testing? Paul

Posted By Helen Horton Hi Paul I think I can confirm my own previous posting, as luck would have it I have been doing a bit of clearing out and have come across some presentation material from Zurich's electrical inspection team that I went to a couple of years back. It includes a table from the 16th edition Wiring Regs on Frequency of Inspection. Commercial premises are quoted as requiring testing every 3 years and "special installations" like petrol filling stations every year. I think that as the premises I used to work in handled HFLs we followed the advice re petrol stations as it was all Zone 1 electrical installations. If you remind me of your fax number I can fax the relevant page to you - but don't worry if it doesn't come until Friday as I am away for a couple of days and I'll do it when I get back.
