Does anyone know of any nominal heights used for swipe card entry systems, clocking in machines, etc. in reference to building regs, DDA, etc. ?

I recommend a risk assessment.
Who are the users
How often
Access / Egress from machines
Equipment carried / PPE worn
Environmental Conditions - Lighting etc
Height, reach physical capability of users
Equipment Supplier Data
Based on that make a judgement.

I consider that any guidance here would follow statutory heights etc as light switches etc etc. I suppose one major area to look at would be access by any vertically challenged persons, to comply with the DDA you would certainly need to access the user groups.
It may be best perhaps to have the scanning type which picks up a signal from the card and converts the signal to information; these I believe have a working distance of two to three metres thus eliminating any need for strategic placement.

1metre is generally acceptable under the DDA recommendations

Have you had a look in the IEE 16th edition regs and associated standards re. light switches and such like?

The landing push buttons for lifts have to be mounted between 900 mm and 1200 mm centres to meet the EN81-70 requirements if that is any help!
