Hi Melanie.
Are you sure that this is the question you want answered?
Surely you should be thinking about e.g. the 95% percentile in each case.
Data is in anthropometric tables.

I don't know how old the data are but, according to Stephen Pheasant in 'Bodyspace', the average male height is 1.74 m and the average female height is 1.61 m.

Melaine, if you are asking the question for reasons of risk assessments one of the areas you need to consider is people of an ethnic minority. Some individuals from other countries are very tall and could possibly reach over a guard on the back of a power press etc. Others i.e. from asia may have small fingers and could easily put their fingers in to an excepted 6mm gap. You need to look at the people you are employing.

Apparently European men are becoming taller 1.8m for man or 5’ 10, yet our American cousins have stopped growing
