Does anybody can tell me how many air changes are needed in welding workshop 6 metres by 5 metres and 13 courses high. The present filtering system is not effective for plasma welding.

Louis, that would depend on number of welders and hence amount of fume and gas. To be sure you will need to carry out some sort of monitoring of the fume component and exposure levels. Use this to carry out a COSHH assesment which will dictate the amount of air to be moved to protect your people.

Local extraction may be an option also. Welders sometimes don't like them cos it affects the torch due to strong draft from the extraction unit. You would need to measure if it was being effective and not pushing the fumes into another work area.
HSG 37 Intro to LEV might be useful aslo.
Worthwhile doing a search on the HSE website for metal fume fever, I've forgotten the specific medical guidance note thingy they use MSDHS's or something. Help someone...

HSE have a new webpage dedicated to welding activities. It may be worth a look.
