Hello colleagues,
Can anybody advise on any specific requirement to display Fire Action signs. For example should they be displayed adjacent to all fire alarm call points and fire extinguisher points, final exits etc? I am looking for statutory requirements if possible.

The answer is YES, you do not necassarily have the words but the pictograms etc (SS&S Regs 96.)
Your fire RA should identify this.

Thanks Dave, but 'yes' to which part of my query? Is it stated anywhere exactly where the signs hould be located?
NB I think you might have misunderstood, I am talking about fire action signs not fire exit signs.

The fire action notice should be located at 'a fire point' usually in same location as the break glass call points, and where fire extinguishers are located. I would also provide an example in any induction pack and training given to new staff.
As an additional back up I would suggest notices are provided in areas of high fire risk and staff communal areas such as canteens, tea mash points, etc. Hope this helps.

Thanks Simon but it still doesn't answer the query about the mandatory locating of fire action signs (or is it me wilting in the heat?)
(I bet Frank knows the answer)

There is no "mandatory locating" Malcolm - other than that which the Fire Authority may have specificed in a Fire Certificate (if you have one). It is a matter for risk assessment and the above answer about next to fire exits plus extras in high occupancy areas puts it very well.

Thanks Heather.
My reason for asking was that I pointed out to somebody that there was no fire action sign adjacent to the extinguisher point by the main exit door. I was challenged to state where it said that there had to be one and I was after a defibitive answer.
Thabnks again.

'Common pactice and custom' to place adjacent to fire escapes etc.
Might be in BS5499 Fire Escape Route sign - Code of Practice
Remember BS's are statutory, just good practice
General requirement under the Workplace Fire regs, or whatever they are called this week, to provide information as part of your emergency plan.
Lots of safety legislation is very general/generic - not uncommon to not to be able to point to a specific line in legisltation that says you must do.....whatever

If the building has a fire certificate Malcolm then look on the plan that forms part of the certificate. If it indicates there should be a notice there then there should be one.
Otherwise see what the risk assessment says. Fire point at main exit from building - I'd more than likely have a fire action notice there, especially as it's the one visitors are most likely to see....
Happy Friday (going home now...)

Sorry Malcolm if I failed to clear up your enquiry. There is no statutory rules saying where fire action notices have to be located. If your building does have a fire certificate then the locations of the notices will be listed on there.
But, with the introduction of the Regulatory Reform Order the fire authority will expect your risk assessment to be reviewed and fire precautions, including signage be updated as appropriate. This will, of course apply to numbers and locations of fire action notices.
