As a team we welcome the recent postings on a Friday which contributors have used for a gentle moan! We decided that it was our turn to state some of our concerns.
The letter in the latest copy of the SHP is welcomed as it is concerned about the lack of professional behaviour on the website forums. The Moderating Team are required to try and ensure that the IOSH Acceptable Use Guidelines are enforced on the forums but usually with a very "light touch". Contrary to popular belief we are not ogres but Corporate Members of IOSH who are volunteers and have a wish to see the forums provide a useful service to Members and all other persons who have an interest in Health and Safety.
I started moderating over six years ago and have seen the forums improve immensely over that time and the amount of visitors has almost quadrupled.
We may not always be right, but are willing to listen and learn! If any person has a problem they are welcome to firstly contact Neal Clark at IOSH or myself and we will attempt to resolve it.
Recently there has been a spate of "personal attacks/comments" which are inappropriate and we would ask all users to try and keep our website to the very high standard that has come to be expected from IOSH as a leading Professional Body in Health and Safety.
Rant over - thanks for viewing and have a good weekend.
Martin Bessant - Lead Moderator for Moderating Team.

Shall I be first to reply?
I reckon the moderators do not too bad a job and stop or comment on anything which gets too far-fetched or personal.
And they do let the Friday fun go ahead which brightens the day up a bit.
Well done to them, lets give them a round of applause - and for joining in wiht a rant

Martin,
Pleased to see the moderators having a (justified) Friday rant.
I believe you have pulled me up a couple of times and I have always agreed with your opinion. (I'll avoid the asterisks in future)
There is a fine line between "personal attacks" and " gentle chiding" (which is what I go for usually) which we must walk.
Some of us (me included) give "off-the-cuff" comments, which others may criticise or contradict. If the criticism or contradiction is accompanied with "politesse" then I have no problem. (sometimes I can be really stoopid (probably the aberlour))
So far, (SO FAR) very few people have come up with a personal or vicious attack on me (20 paces, macdo supersized) but it may happen. I trust you to moderate.
Have you pulled my joke about the homosexual marriage yet ?
Regards, thanks, and have a good Friday
Merv

Given that we have had some heated discussion regards corporate/non corporate members, has there been any consideration to having non corporate members as moderators so we have a moderating team that represents all member grades, especially given our current President's recorded statement about IOSH being more representative of all members?
This would certainly take the sting out of comments/critiscms about IOSH being a corporate members body only.
For what it's worth I think the moderators do a good job, though am a little dissapointed when genuine H&S threads become hijacked with critiques of spelling and grammer and are not jumped on as they can be quite personnel, especially when on the recieving end.

As one of the contributors that has been jumped on (not for any attack on individuals I hasten to add) I think every time I post/reply/respond it is always in the back of my mind that the site is monitored, I guess that makes me all the more concerned that what I say is correct (technically speaking) as I have been known to 'rabbit on' at times, oh what the heck I'm doing it now.
Martin; you and the team do a good job and it’s a pleasure to see you starting a post off, more of them please.
For their jolly good fellow/fellowesses, for..............
