Hi all,
Im in need of a little help.....
Has anyone undertaken any risk assessments regarding the errecting/dismantling of marquees?
Im familiar with the factors regarding the placment of the marquee - site location,overhead/underground obstrcutions, weather conditions, stability, maximum occupancy calculations etc but was wondering if anyone had any actual example risk assessments I could have a look at to see how they have managed it?

If this is a largish event do not forget the marquee may have a metal frame. Is it bonded to earth?
I did one of these for an event at work, when we did a debrief afterwards we realised that we did not earth the marquee and had over 40 amps running into the Audio Visual equipment from a 3 phase supply.
The electrical engineers out there might want to weigh in at this point to give opinion on whether or not the unbonded tent frame sitting in a concrete yard would have had enough earth leakage without a ground spike to activate the RCD's.
But at the time we felt that it was something we should do in the future, along with having more than 4 days notice that an event is happening.

Hi Chris,
Your biggest enemy is the weather. Even relatively light winds can cause problems for this type of structure.
It should be well anchored either by a traditional spike into soft ground or a rawlbolt into concrete.
This may help with any earthing problem but electrically it will be any fittings that are most likely to cause you problems such as stages inside with associated AV equipment and power supplies to the structure as trip hazards.
Cables should be either flown well above or protected by matting. Sometimes they can be dug in.
Ingress of water to this kit can be expensive too.
Many marquees are not load bearing structures so look out for AV people hanging lights or sound equipment off the structure.
The Star Events Group website has some useful information on wind loads and rigging. (google them)
I assume you are referring to frame type marquees as opposed to more traditional tents which have different problems in terms of guy ropes/wires.

Chris,if it is yourself erecting the marquee you will need to carry out the assessment, if it is a contractor / marquee company then they should be supplying you. Do not do it for someone else they may not follow it and you will be in the firing line if something goes wrong.
