Hi All
I have recently just eventually got our fork trucks licensed and taxed, BUT does anyone know what the official criteria is for ensuring they are roadworthy, is it wrote down anywhere and does it come under the same umbrella as normal road vehicles.
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Phone your local vehicle testing station. Find them in yellow Pages etc. They will be able to tell you what you need to have and what to inspect etc as if there was a problem on the road, the police would send it there to be inspected.

The manufacturer of your trucks should be able to supply you with all details required to ensure roadworthiness to Road Traffic Act standards. I am presuming that you already have some form of statutory inspections on your fleet in place by an approved external body, and maintenance logs for all of these vehicles?

Yes we have a maintenance contract for but some of the trucks are owned by us. I think that maintenance man would be the best port of call. I just presumed there would be some website that gave a definative answer. But i should know better now in this safety game things are usually never as they seem.
Thanks for the answers so far anyway.

If you can road tax the vehicle then it is roadworthy, if not keep it in the depot, yard, complex, whatever.

If you can tax it, it's road-worthy ?
There are loads of taxed cars on the road that shouldn't be !

You will also need to check , if the truck is run on red diesel, if you can use it on the highway.

Thanks for that link John one of the best i have seen.
The only thing i would add is that there is now what i would call an MOT for a forklift and that is a Thorough Inspection required on them now.
It what is looked for by HSE not just proof of servicing?

Well, as a rule your insurance company requires inspection of the truck.
