Posted By Julia Bicker My IOSH MS certificate expires next year. Do I need to re-sit the 5 day course again or is there a refresher? Many thanks.

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Julia I was under the impression that there was a short refresher course to take into consideration, (among other things) any updated Acts/Regulations etc. I feel certain someone will respond with the definitive answer fairly soon. Chazza

Posted By Alan Hoskins I thought IOSH had quietly dropped this idea... It never really took hold in my opinion, and although there were a few refresher courses run at the time I don't think you'll find anything currently on offer. (or will you...) Alan

Posted By Julia Bicker no, I've not seen any mention of refresher courses. So does that mean I have to sit the whole thing again?

Posted By garyh My understanding is that you do not need to resit - it is still valid. In my opinion there is too much of this going on - in any case if you are a practitioner you will stay up to date regardless as you do you job. Then again it makes money for training companies and other bodies.......... After all your GCSEs, Diplomas, Degrees etc don't expire.

Posted By Alan Hoskins Probably not, but we need a definitive answer from IOSH on this one. I don't recall getting one previously though (there was a thread on the subject about three years ago). Alan

Posted By John Watson My understanding as a centre who provides IOSH MS is that the shelf life of the certificate DOES NOT have an expiry date. Perhaps Hazel may like to confirm? John Watson Corporate Risk Systems Ltd

Posted By Caroline Holden Good afternoon everyone To clarify the position on this point It is IOSH's view that it is best practice for Managing Safely certificate holders to refresh their learning after a three year period. IOSH provides a syllabus for Trainers to write their course around entitled 'Managing Safey v.6 re-certification'. Historically we did offer a pack for trainers to use, however due to low demand this has now been withdrawn from sale. There are still some course providers who offer this course in both pack and own-authored versions - see list of IOSH licensed course providers on this website. However, many organisations, often due to financial pressures do not choose to re-certificate their managers and IOSH does not insist that they do this. Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney I suppose one could conclude that if MS as a course is a start for people, they would then go on to say, NGC or diploma/NVQ etc thus eliminating the need to refresh on the IOSH MS course. If one were to stay at MS level throughout their job responsibility then it would be a good thing to include a half day refresher. Actually I think it should be a must if you have decided to stay at that level of competency. Charles

Posted By Alan Hoskins We always encourage our staff (at whatever level) to undertake relevant, specific, additional training rather than general 'refresher' type courses. We feel this gives more value, both to the individual and to the organisation. Alan
