Posted By Robert (Rod) Douglas Hi Guys, I am after a bit of advice regarding Disabled Parking Spaces. I know that I require 1 Disabled Space per Disabled Employee, but what is best practice for how many additional bays I must set aside for visitors to site etc? I have contacted the Disabled Rights Commission and the person I spoke had no idea!!! Help......... Yours Aye, Rod D

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Rod I trust the following information is what you require; if not do not hesitate to contact me directly, I have a plethora of documentation and guides. For shopping or recreational uses in a car park of less than 200 spaces 6% of capacity should be provided with a minimum of 3 spaces. Over 200 spaces will require 4% of capacity plus an extra 4 spaces. Car parks must be well lit with even, compacted and level surfaces. In multi-storey car parks separate ramped access should be available as an alternative to lifts, to be used in the event of lift failure. Consideration should also be given to the provision of Parent and child parking spaces. If parking is not concessionary, ticket machines should be accessible to wheelchair users and close to reserved spaces.

Posted By John Johnston Hey Rod, If I could just add to this in relation to workplaces. If the amount of disabled motorist users is known within the workplace, at least one space per known employee is required, plus at least one space or 2% of the total capacity. A minimum of one space is required for visitors and should be clearly marked for staff/visitors. Where the amount of disabled motorists within the workplace is not known, at least one space or 5% of the parking capacity should be provided. This will include both visitors and staff. However, experience will allow a more accurate judgement with regards the building use. I usually work to a figure of one accessible bay to every 20 parking spaces in the car park (based on building use and experience). I hope this helps. Please feel free to email me if you would like further information. Very best regards, John
