I am about to do a risk assessment of our IT department and wanted peoples views on whether they need to complete a DSE assessment for all the work stations they have in their work shop. They do not spend a lot of time at each station but might move from one station to the next during the course of the day. I have initially suggested that they need to complete assessments for their work stations but as they say they have 12-15 work areas that they might use in one day.
Also if anyone has any further information or where info can be found regarding computer building and the specific risks in an IT department so I have some information at hand before I start I would be greatly appreciated.

You have two tasks to complete; all workstations should be assessed to see if they meet the minimum requirements in the Schedule to the Regs; and, you should determine which of your employees are 'users' as defined in the Regs. In determining your users, you should consider the total time they spend using DSE not the time spent on each workstation.

Manual handling - overstretching - lifting monitors and hard drivers - handling boxes etc Working with electricity - IT bods seem to have a passion for screwdrivers and taking things to pieces - If they are involved in cabling work asbestos and Working at Height can be an issue - they also dont like H & S very much as we tend to make them do things properly so your 12-15 stations is probably nearer to 5 (sorry slightly cynical). Have now tamed my dept even got some of them trained as DSE assessors - we assess their workstations but stations that are used on an adhoc basis get a "blind" assessment and the individuals have specific assessments done on a personal level if they have special requirements
