Posted By Robin B Hi I'm trying to raise the profile and involve everyone more in H&S. This idea surfaced over a period of time but particularly after recent H&S Committee meetings that, over the years have become degraded into a re-active forum spending more time looking at what has been done rather than planning what should/could be done. I've already suggested that at least 1 committee member join with the H&S team and a site manager on monthly walkrounds - a sort of 'safety sampling' exercise. I'd really like to get involved with H&S week but the subject this year, as last, does not really suit the environment. Another thought was to have our own safety week with various general subjects. One idea was to have a hazard spotting competition, with prizes. Does anyone know if there is an interactive cd/dvd of this type of thing on the market? and if so a contact? The environment is varied with offices, laboratories, manufacturing, packing and warehousing. Any other ideas would be welcome. Robin

Posted By AlB At my place of work we have monthly SHE inspections where a group will inspect the workplaces, which will take around 3 hours, and then in the afternoon there is a committee where all the issues are discussed and any SHE concerns raised. Present at the inspections will be the Managing Director, the Operations Director, SHE Manager, Location Supervisor (but not the Manager), and at least one Safety Representative. We have a number of departments and the SHE Rep will be the rep from that department, so over the course of an inspection there may be 5 reps involved. The committee meetings involves all of those included in the inspection as well as a number of other invited persons. It works very well and gets a lot done.

Posted By Merv Newman I try to get all managers involved in safety. At the very least a monthly safety visit to their area including supervisors and safety reps. One hour per month DEVOTED to safety. Merv

Posted By PST Robin To raise the profile and to involve everyone you could try some of the following: (This very basic and you may already have a hazard list) Ask each employee to come up with 5 or more hazards in their workplace, creating “the workplace” and “their own” hazard list. Put it on a wall somewhere prominent with their names next to hazards. Each area i.e., office, stores etc could nominate a representative to attend the meeting and discuss/negotiate/closeout each hazard. Use your risk assessment form to record everything. Your HSE committee can decide high-risk hazards and work their way through it in their meeting. (or part of the meeting) The wider range of personnel involved the better! These topics/hazards can also form part of the workplace audit/walk about, the committee should congratulate each person who identify hazards (makes them part of it all). Nominate the best hazard spotted each month/week give a small prize, i.e. home safety PPE, gardening gloves, safety glasses, RCD plug, etc everyone is in the garden this time of year and hobble into work with injuries sustained at home! Hope this helps. Ah well back to cutting the lawn. PST

Posted By Fornhelper Just a thought but why stop at rewarding people for 'hazard spotting'? Encouraging people to identify and highlight good / safe practice as well as the negative aspects can put a more positive slant on things. I do think there is a place for both but feel we sometimes neglect the encouragement of good practice in favour of the 'hazard spotting' approach. FH

Posted By PST FH is correct, and it does not have to be hazard spotting any topic will do, you need to create the vehicle for people to take ownership of H&S. PST
