Establishing the competence of electrical contractors
Rank: Guest
|
Posted By Martin Taylor We have just engaged a small electrical contracting company for electrical and lighting installations.
I have requested the usual insurance documents but am not clear on what certificates they need to show to be considered competent electrical contractors.
What certificates should their site electricians have to carry out electrical works.
anybody in the electrical contracting foeld who can point me in the right direction I will be most grateful

Posted By Catman Hi Martin
The company should ideally be NIC-EIC registered (have a look on the 'specifiers'section of the NIC website for more advice). The indiviuals should carry a JIB grade card.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Posted By Jan Moore As well as being NICEIC registered, I suggest they have a working knowledge of asbestos regulations as well especially if they are attacking ceiling voids! (bad experiences have prompted the few words)!
Take care

Posted By MarkJAWatkins An asbestos awareness course is a must. Also Arc Shields, ArTic fuses, Flash Guards and certain ceramic fuses all have asbestos present (I have alist of ceramic style fuses with asbestos millboard present that I can email)
Also depending on what voltage of equipment they are working on there may be other asbestos elements such as certain style of electrical boxes have heaters that have a woven insulation asbestos bandage as well as the textured coating on the inside of the box.

Posted By MarkJAWatkins Stuart, I am emailing list through just now. I will also be sampling another 20 fuse types in the next few weeks so I will email that through also (you will probably have to remind me)

Posted By Martin Taylor thanks to everybody for thier response - I will upgrade my standards to include NIC EIC standards. The observations on asbestos awareness are useful too - there are a few electricians I know who would do well to consider their understanding of this risk
thanks again
Martin

Posted By Ron Hunter Membership of Electrical Contractors Association would be equally valid (ECA)& there may be other bodies I'm not aware of, but suggest membership of professional body is only a part of any due diligence approach to ensuring contractor competence. You should ask for more in the way of risk assessments, method statements, training and competency of individual employees, etc etc.Asbestos Awareness is a must, but equal duty on host employer/controller of premises to provide info on ACMs in non-domestic premises. Maybe consider Evaluation schemes run by Insurance Companies and others, e.g. CHAS Registration.
