Acetylene is a single chemical compound, C2H2, officially called 'ethyne' (not to be confused with ethane or ethene which are totally different chemicals). It is extremely flammable and does not take kindly to being compressed, having a tendency to explode. It is therefore stored in cylinders dissolved in acetone and absorbed onto a medium such as pumice.
It is extremely common in industry, as it is used for oxy-acetylene welding.

I believe that acetylene explodes/combusts spontaneously on mixture with chlorine gas, so if you have any chlorine processes you need to assess any risks associated with simultaneous release or use of acetylene in the chlorine areas.
