Posted By renown Apart from being a safety professional, my other roles include quality manager, facilities manager as well as looking after the environment. I have today been given the role of looking after our transport. We have a couple of 7 1/2 tonners and about 6 vans. I will be looking after tachographs, issuing keys etc, but wondered if any other D.E.'s look after transport and could give me some advice with this role and necessary legislation, e.g. drivers working hours etc. It's all a bit new to me! Posted By renown JayJay Just had a look, yes, I carried one out 2nd June 05! That's a start, but nothing re working hours or tachographs, we hired a transport manager who left, not much to go on neither.

Posted By rb Renown, Myself and our Warehouse Manager have recently been given rsponsibility for our company's transport so I too am on the learning curve! As it turns out it has worked quite well with him doing all the admin- checking tacho's, booking vehicles out etc and just using the H&S angle should one of our drivers need a quiet word in their ear to clarify an issue over incorrect tacho's/ incorrect driving hours etc. If you would like to get in touch off the forum, I can go into more detail as to our experiences in this area. Posted By JayJay It would be a good idea to sit down and review yor RA and include the things that you've mentioned like tacho's,driving times etc. A good thing i found from previous experience is to issue company drivers with a disposable camera and notepad in the event of them having an accident. With the number of hours that your company drivers no doubt do, there's always going to be the risk of 1 or 2 accidents. The more evidence and information that you have the better it would be for insurance claims JayJay

Posted By Ron Hunter A good starting point would be the Frieght Transport Association (FTA)website -lots of authoritative info there -you may wish to join. Your posting raises an interesting "real world" dilemma - particularly in our line of work, where we stress to others the importance of competency- yet we ourselves are constantly lumbered with being the company 'expert' on an ever-expanding range of issues. This doesn't rest easy with the IOSH code!
