Posted By Gary L Good afternoon Can anyone tell me whether there are plans to increase the minimum size of traffic cones for single carriageway roads from 450mm to 750mm. I've heard rumours but nothing definite. thanks, Gary

Posted By Stuart Nagle Gary the size of the road cones will depend entirely on the speed limit of the road. 450mm = 30mph. Speeds above 30mph will require taller road cones (all of which need to have retroreflective banding) See the code of practice for the 'New Road and Street Works Act' (type in 'New Road and Street Works Act' into a search engine - such as Google, and you can download a copy) and see the last page which provides all the relevant information in an easy to understand chart... Posted By RP There are no plans to alter the main requirements for road traffic cones. 450 cones may be used (minimum size) on all single carraigeway roads up to 60mph, although it is not good practice to use them on 40mph+ The new Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual is to be released on 31 July 2006. Posted By Gary L Thanks Stuart & RP I already have copies of both those docs Our company does its own traffic management for roads up to 50mph but on occassions we employ TM companies when we have to work on dual carriageways etc. It was while conducting a site visit with a TM company on site that the conversation came round to the size of cones and how the minimum size of cones was changing from 450 to 750mm, but I can't find anything on the 'net. regards, Gary
