Posted By Kenneth Patrick Our sports club has two big marquee events at the end of the month. Since I am in Safety they have asked me for advice. Several hundred people involved, sportsman's lunch and a ball. Not really my line but they think all of us safety people are the same.Any advice would be welcome

Posted By Chris Knagg The event safety guide is very uuseful. You will probably find Chapter 1 the most useful as that is about planning and management which is the back bone of success to any event. The rest is scalable and either applicable or not depending on the components taht make up your event. As a staring point consider your event program, whats happening and when? Risk assess line by line. Don't forget the set-up and breakdown phases of the event these can be hazardous periods with lots of construction type activities. Think of the emergency and contingency needs of the event, fire, first aid, security etc. Develop an event plan that pulls all this information together. Enjoy!

Posted By Jane Purser Hello Jonathon, I don't know the size of the organisation you work in but I am the H&S Adviser for a NHS Trust with > 4,000 staff and the Trust is rolling out the Stress Management Standards over the next 18 months - 2 years. The Trust decided to provide every individual with a survey to ensure it received as much data as possible. Due to the size of the task we are completing this task on a rolling programme of area by area. We have also set up a website with all the info on it, including the survey, timescales etc in an effort for staff to see we are being open and honest and trying to address concerns. On the survey the only personal information we have asked for (apart from their answers) is: a) Which Directorate they work in (the Trust is split into Directorates with hundreds of/few people in them. We have to take the chance that Directorates with few people in will be happy to complete the survey. After all, if they are suspicious and don't wish to do it then we cannot make them. However, we do have the trade unions, Occie Health etc on our side and they have full access to all the info on the intranet so they can well before it's rolled out what is happening); b) Grade e.g. nursing, medical, clerical, manager etc c) Number of years in the Trust i.e. 10> 20. By this we are hoping to establish whether there are patterns/trends between grades/Directorate/length of service (e.g. have people got used to the management style and/or because of length of service/do junior/senior staff feel more stressed, and so on. In addition to all this, we are also providing Stress Management training also on a rolling programme for staff to attend over the 2 year period as and when they wish. We are also providing further training for managers on completing specific stress risk assessments. Oh, and providing Focus Groups, as per the Standards! Hopefully staff will see the Trust is in it for the long run, money is being spent on their welfare and that all information is freely available for them to download/read anytime they like; I also advertise the roll out at all the IOSH training courses I provide, as well as other H&S training I provide/assist Managers with. This is the best we've been able to come up with to help ease any concerns. I just hope I'm not boring them silly about it all.....! I hope this helps you and if you wish to contact me feel free and I'll help in any way I can. cheers Jane

Posted By Sheila EJ Keogh Kenneth, Don't forget to consider fire safety! The ODPM has finally published some of its guidance booklets to assist in complying with the new fire safety regs. The website you will need is http://www.communities.g...ng/index.asp?id=1162112, but the fire guides for outdoor events is not yet ready (You'll need to keep checking the site). Sheila
