Posted By Chris Hall Hello all Has anyone heard of employers being charged for visits undertaken by EHO's - - specifically when returning to review progress on recommendations from an earlier visit (in this it was food hygiene related issues within a kitchen premises) I personally have never head of this and thought it sounded pretty odd - any comments?? thanks Chris

Posted By Ron Hunter A charge might be valid if the work was requested by the business. I'm thinking of a parallel with L.A. Weights & Measures Inspectors - they cannot charge for routine regulatory inspection, but are allowed to charge where the retailer requests a check on scales, petrol dispensers, etc. or where new or refurbished equipment is being commissioned.

Posted By CRT The only charges made by LA`s (not EHO`s) would be for certain licensing requirements (ie) tattooing, skin piercing, pet shops etc. this fee would cover the cost of the licensing inspection and issue of a licence. As an aside, our LA has had reports recently of a person alleging to be a EHO trying to gain access into business premises, once in he looks around gives a bit of chat and then tries to get them to pay money for certain maintenance services. If in doubt ask to see ID and if neccessary phone the LA office to check.

Posted By pol Hi Chris, I have spoken to colleagues in our food team and although there are one or two Local Authorities who have discussed introducing a charge for a 'revisit' the general concensus is that you cannot charge for a statutory inspection nor for a revisit to confirm the required works have been completed. Generally the person responsible would contact E. Health when he has completed recommended works (obviously does not pertain to IN's or PN's)and the EHO would arrange a mutually convenient time to meet up. Hope this helps somewhat

Posted By Brian Hagyard Chris. I believe there is a “push” at the moment for a “Scores on the Door’s” scheme to be adopted nationally; The Food Standard Agency is currently sponsoring a few trial areas. Food companies are presently rated on a national scheme which determines the next visit (apologies if I am teaching grandmother to suck eggs) I have heard that some authorities have charged for a visit if a company thinks they have done enough to change their score and want it reviewing before the next programmed visit, but cannot confirm if that is true. Brian.
