Posted By Keith F I work for an Oil and Gas Operator who are experiencing a poor run of incidents of which there are various causes but are linked by a failure of the basics such as hazard identification and perception of risk. As a result, we are looking to launch a hard hitting safety campaign to promote the theme of 'Back to Basics' and will consist of DVDs, posters, in-house presentations, etc. We would also like to arrange for a speaker to visit our sites and speak to our crews. The speaker will require to have had experience of an occupational injury (either suffered themselves or by somebody close to the them) and to be able to document the effect of the incident both privately and professionally. The speaker will obviously also require to be a good communicator and physically fit to go offshore. Does anyone know of such a speaker who would be a positive inclusion to our hard-hitting campaign? I would appreciate any help on this as my investigations have so far produced nothing.

Posted By Ian H Keith I would support Raymond's post; it can help to get someone in to talk directly about why it is a good idea to work safely. If not for the company, for you and your loved ones. The impact on people outside of work often has a greater influence. I am surprised that your investigation has drawn no other conclusions. I obviously don't know the details, but in similar situations I have always found cultural and commercial balance related issues. Unfortunately these can be linked to individual perceptions and influences up and down the business, plus the impacts from clients and stakeholders. Do you think people in the management structure are open to an honest chat about some of these issues, or do they not see a problem? I think that a talk in isolation will not give you the desired outcome. It will have an impact, but will need to be coupled with a change in leadership and desire to improve. If there isn't one already, you may need to create a sense of urgency that the current situation has to change. All the best Ian

Posted By Keith F Thanks to Ray and Ian for your prompt and helpful responses. With regards to Ians additional points, I am happy to report that Management are aware of our safety performance and are onboard, supporting & driving all our initiatives and campaigns. Of which, also includes a major investment in the re-vitalisation of our behavioural safety programme. The desire to improve and meet our objectives is most definitely there.

Posted By Chris Knagg http://www.outtakes.co.u...asp?Key_Words=KensVideos Ken Woodward gets my vote every time. He was blinded in a chemical spill at a very well known soft drink manufacturer. Last year he was guest speaker at a number of behavioural safety training sessions I attended. You watch a video about his accident first, the hosts asks you a few searching questions about the accident and without any prior warning tap tap tap in walks Ken. Deafening silence and what an impact. Staff are still talking about the experience.

Posted By Chris Lumley Hi, Ken Woodward is very good. A lot has also been done in the Oil & Gas sector using Gail's Red Shoes and Davy's Baby, both done by actors but extremely powerful. Let me know if you need anymore information. Good Luck Chris
