I have been asked to review the safety footwear policy in our automotive plastics factory. WE have always specified footwear to be fitted with steel midsoles which I am told is in response to a risk of foot punctures from plastic sprues (sharp plastic runners) that are detached from the plastoc parts and can become litter on the floor.
Using this specification of shoe we have never had such a foot history and I have no data as to historic accidents before my time.
Do any colleagues working in plastic industry apply the same specification for footwear? Does anybody have any records of foot punctures from plastic parts - or even from screws?

so far I have had no response from people in the plastics arena - maybe another apporach is to ask do YOU use steel midsoles in your shoes? if so what are the risks that you are protecting against - this way I can assess if the risk form plastic sprues is commensurate with that which is traditionally applied for steel midsoles
as ususal any feedback is welcome
