I see that Noel Edmonds is claiming to have RSI because he "has to lift a heavy telephone" repeatedly during every show. No doubt a large claim will be lodged; will he accept the deal?
Any volunteers to carry out a manual handling assessment for the poor dear?
Ouch, I really will have to satop this typing: Carpal Tunnel syndrome is setting in!

Chris Moyles reckons its a publicity stunt. Mind you that telephone looks very heavy. Was any sort of risk assessment carried out on such a dangerous activitiy.

Course there was no assessment. It did not involve a risk activity, unlike some of his shows!!!!!!!!! My wife is addicted to this programme but it totally bemuses me!!!

Fortunately I live in the 'Real World' and in my opinion, what gives 'us H & S people' a bad name is the lack of a sense of humour!
Take care!

Gary,
I understand you have a sense of humour. Can you let me know where you got it? I have been looking for one for ages and have had no luck. Thought I had found one once but it was just a sarcastic bent.
Yours

Is this not indicitive of the developing UK culture.
Presuming Noel is suffering from RSI or a work related manual handling condition - how likely is that because of lifting up a "heavy" telephone reciever 60 times a day?
He seems to have found a doctor that has diagnosed a condition and apportioned the cause as using the "heavy" telephone - I presume that Noel uses this arm for no other task on a daily basis.
How many other work related cases do we daily have to deal with, when an ill-informed GP (usually instructed by, or provided with part-truth explanations from, the "injured party") diagnosis a complaint and identifies the root cause as being work related. Resulting in concerned employee, increased stress, mistrust between employee and employer and then the dreaded claim - which will be settled out-of-court since its the word of a ill-informed GP v that of the well-intentioned EHS professional. (Courts always facour the former - hence the settlement).
In this particualr case, the root cause has been found (allegedly) - "heavy telephone", therefore I presume that Noels employer will follow the
1. Eliminate the risk - stop using the heavy phone - have the offer flashed up on a little screen for all / Noel to see
2. Substitute the risk - get a lighter phone - some boffin could come up with a hands-free solution!?!
3. Provide a lifting aid - appropriate suspended spring mounted devices can eliminate the weight factor
4. Tain Noel in correct manaual handling techniques - should he swap / alternate arms to reduce the risk by 50%
5. If these cannot reduce the risk enough, then they need to consider whether Noel is physically capable - after all he is now sensitised to this type of physical activity and the risk of recurrence is significantly increased
6. Communicate this to all the other tv companies worldwide - to warn all their presenters about the risk and to follow the risk assessments steps above (or deemed appropriate by the EHS professional employed by the tv company)
Full marks though for the tv industry, if my memory serves me correctly, did one of Noel's previous shows have a far more serious "work related injury" - now it seems RSI is their main risk. Wonder what thei EHS policy states (I Note that they have >5 employees from the credits)

You can get the unused ones free from your HR department, along with personalities and the notion of grey areas...however, if you try to sell these on ebay or privately you have to declare they are grey imports to the 'men in black'!

PS I thought it was Noel that was 'the banker'

If Noel was 'Banking' too much it could explain a more logical reason for his injury!!!

Using a tool for its intended use isn't manual handling; oh, sorry, banking, I thought you said something else ;-)
