Hi everyone and good morning fellow safety guru's. Just a short one We are currently contracting welders to come on site for a continued 3 month period to do repair work. Its not something I have come into contact with a great deal so any advice would be welcomed.
I have done the usual contractor induction and permits to work etc, but i suppose one question would be would they need to sign the same permit daily as I will obviously cover it all with a risk assesment etc.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I used to work for a large petro-chemical company and we had the contractors signing the permit daily and carrying out the usual checks. Why?
To ensure that the area was checked over for hazards regularly before work began and finished. It would also capture any new contractors or 'stand-in' welders etc. It is easy to just do the permit and let them get on with it, but I would prefer the checks to be carried out and signed for - it instils a sense of responsibility on them.

Hi AJM, we use a "hot work" permitwhich has in it,
location/task/is fire watch req./contractor name/their supervisor/signed by,their employee,our employee/date /start time/expiry date and time/final check of area, by them,by us/
checks include,
their supervisor has an emergency contact number for us/any conbustibles in the area/what fire ex. do they require/any screeens needed/checks on supply bottles& hoses/checks to work areas 2 hrs after work has finished/ let others know of the hot work/can ignition sources get to other areas, floors below etc.

Hi, I agree with TBC. It is usual for Hot Works Permits to be raised daily or even shift-based.
Given the nature of the risks, especially when involving temporary or transient workers, it is essential in my opinion.
Do your part too though - audit the process a couple of times in the early days, and another couple of times towards the end.
