We have a query on the cushion distance between the crash barrier vehicle and the mobile worker/grass cutter/channel sweeper in front.
When the barrier vehicle is driving along (at about 7 mph, duly counting the traffic volume that overtakes him) how far in front does the worker need to be? We think 10 metres, but does anybody know if its minimum, maximum, not exceeding or 'about'?
Many thanks to any Chapter 8ers who may be able to help.

Have read quickly through the Red Book - Safety at Stree and Road Works, A Code of Practice - and there is no quick answer to this question. Basic requirements given for mobile work identify the need for advance signage, roof mounted beacons, directional arrow on vehicle to show which side to pass etc. It also states that single vehicle working must not be carried out on dual carriageways to which the national speed limit applies. There is no vehicle to works distance given for mobile working.
Past experience here has shown that if there is too much gap the traffic will cut in and possibly hit the workers, too little and in the event of shunt they get hit by their own protective vehicle. Each situation and even sections of the same road will have different hazards and require risk assessment.
We carry out litter picking of a dual carriageway A road which has the national speed limit - following risk assessment this is now only done under the minimum protection of mobile lane closure using at least two advance vehicles ( one is an HGV bump stop equipped lorry ) to protect the works vehicle and staff working at the roadside. In some sections poor visibility and traffic speed require lane closure working only.

Hi Tony, your last paragraph is pretty much what we are doing - grass cutting, litter picking etc. NRSWA and red booklet really doesn't help does it?! Its the Chapter 8 info we believe details the distance from the crash truck to the worker. I was hoping for a second opinion from somebody to add to that which our highways people have advised us.

When installing traffic-management components such as signs, cones etc the Chapter 8 recommendation is for a minimum distance of 50m behind the men concerned..under motorway conditions I have seen the distance increased to 100m at times.

Your answer lies within Traffic Directive 49 (Highways Agency) and within the Manual of Contract Documents, Vol 1 (Specification for Highway works). The new Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual will also include TD 49 and is available from 31 July from TSO, you can pre-order.
If you are carrying out this work then you should ensure complience with the Relevent Sector Schemes for Temporary Traffic Management. The one you need is Sector Scheme 12 and is available from www.ukas.com.
You need to ensure that your IPV Drivers are trained and competent. If you need help with this please leave a contact phone number.
50m - 100m and in accordance with your company method statement and TD 49.
