Posted By janette shaw Does anyone have any unusual ways to promote and advertise STOP work authority? There seems to be a resistance to actually do this. We have lots of personnel spread over a large area in a variety of countries, on customer sites and our own. We have tried a rather flat poster signed by the man at the top.

Posted By janette shaw STOP work is a system where any individual has the authority and responsibility to STOP work where there are immediate or severe safety concerns to themselves and/or others. These concerns are then raised with the customer/supervisor etc, looked into and resolved where necessary. In the UK this responsibility is covered under the H&S@W etc Act 74 however not all locations have an equivalent. We are trying to find ways to make more people use this proceedure rather than get hurt!

Posted By Kesp Sorry Janette I forgot to add; it is part of an electronic system that empties into a big database designed to add up categorise and report what’s happening where. Competition is created where by people are rewarded for stopping, reporting. It will cost money short term, normally the money will go to charities approved by corporate otherwise it is items like t-shirts, home safety equipment etc. The long term cost should be reduced as hazards are dealt with never to return. Famous last words!!

Posted By Merv Newman Many production people, managers and workers are reluctant to slow down or even stop the production. For any reason, be it H, S, E, Q or even excessive Costs. 200 widgets-an-hour means 200 widgets. Despite everything. Even if they are sCRAP Company policy needs to be clearly defined and explained to workers. A "no blame", or rather a "thanks for doing it practice" should be introduced. However, what constitutes an "immediate and serious danger" must also be clearly defined. I have frequently come across situations in which a particularly bolshy union safety rep has shut down production for the most trivial reasons. This normally happens during the annual wage negotiation period. Any such "STOP" action must be recorded in writing by the person taking the action. As should management response to that action. We keep a special register. Workers MUST have that "STOP" right. But they should not abuse it. Where I come from, such incidents are reported to the factory inspector under the equivalent of RIDDOR.
