Posted By Healthy Debate Well done, you've got your IOSH (or whatever) or not and are now proudly working away in the field of health and safety trying to make the world a safer place one little bit at a time. Why? Bringing about cultural change and safety success is a BIG task. You know what all the bad bits about a safety profession are. So, forget the glory of 'saving lives'...put on your ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS hat and with respect to your career in safety let us know: What really motivates you deep down inside?

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney I know this question has been around the block before in one guise or another, but I will contribute by saying that at a smidgen over a half century in years, I have never known satisfaction like I receive from what I do as a Health & Safety Practitioner, and talk about keep you alert, and yes I have been doing this for a decade or two now. The eyes in the back of my head have been handy and the knowledge I have and try hard to keep up on means I will one step ahead in the game, (most of the time) Above all else I never hate Mondays. Anyone thinking, “Should I become an H&S practitioner”? Well think no more, you might get better money in an alternative profession, but I find it hard to believe you will get better satisfaction, (in my humble opinion). CFT

Posted By Hilary Charlton I really quite enjoy it actually. I also consider myself fortunate to be able to work part time and still bring home a decent salary because of what I do. The main bit I enjoy is the "part time" bit of course, but the work is interesting and varied and I never feel that I am stagnating because the law, rules and regulations change so frequently that it takes effort and enthusiasm just to stay at the same level, let alone progress. It's a lot of things - frustrating, annoying, uplifting, enjoyable, rewarding ... "Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." Confucius Is this why we do it? Hilary

Posted By Cathy Ricketts The magic feeling you get when an employee comes and tells you that they have used the knowledge that you gave them to question someone's poor health and safety practice The glow when a member of the senior management team reinforces the message that you have been trying to get across to staff and really does kick a***e The realisation that the message is getting through when staff come and ask you Health and safety questions BEFORE doing a job The money is nice, the friends and colleagues are brilliant and right at this time (bar a large lottery win) I cant think of anything else I'd rather be doing - so here's to another large glass of red wine to get me through another week

Posted By Ali I see myself as a problem solver I suppose - I was a microbiologist / food technologist in my previous life. May have coloured my underlying reasons. Cuopled with the fact that I genuinely like to help people in difficulty. Hence, when the problem has gone so has the job satisfaction ! Strange ? Ali
