Posted By Merv Newman Technically I suppose they come in the category of "lifting gear" so, yes. I would think. Never come across anyone who actually had them on their inventory as such. Thinks. Merv

Posted By Robert K Lewis If you think about it trolley jacks are much the same as pallet trucks and these are tested regularly. With bottle jacks again think of the potential cost of a failure. The HSE guidance is clear and they need uniquely identifying and testing at 12 month or other determined interval on a scheme of inspection. Having said that I agree with Merv that they are often missed off inventories, along with similar equipment. Bob

Posted By Kesp Robert I have recently come up against the same issue with trolley jacks. The end result was to undertake a PUWER assessment which identified regular maintenance by a competent person. Training for the person using the equipment and good storage to prevent deterioration. Inspection before and following use. This should keep the inspectors happy and also your people safe. Come on Italy!!

Posted By Paul HSE requested lifting examinations for bottle jacks and trolley jacks at all of our dealerships together with proof of inspection/maintenance. We use the same company that completes our 4 post vehicle lifts and the tests are completed on an annual basis. HSE then also requested calibration certification to verify that axle stands were able to sustain their safe working loads and these are completed on a six monthly basis.

Posted By Robert K Lewis Kesp Trolley jacks are lifting equipment and therefore must be tested and certified 12 monthly or under a scheme of examination prepared by a suitable competent person. By regarding them as purely under PUWER some of the necessary testing and examination may not be done. Bob

Posted By Adam Hammerton Robert, I'm assuming you copied and pasted the link in which case you've probably highlighted the comma which throws it off. Let me know if you're still struggling and I'll send it to you direct. Adam

Posted By Ali I used to inspect Kwik Fit and other Motor Vehicle Exhaust & Tyre fitters and the Trolley jacks are defined as lifting equipment under LOLER 1998, so need an inspection at least annually. This differs from, say, axle stands that "support" but don't "lift" vehicles. They need to have SWL clearly marked too. Ali

Posted By EDDIE ROGERS Robert, I help to look after 20 odd bus garages, every jack is identified and inspected 6 monthly. It is fairly common practice in my industry. Ed.

Posted By Merv Newman I put the question to a meeting of safety managers representing more than 20 sites of a large manufacturing group. 2 sites replied "yes, we do have them checked". The rest looked either puzzled or sheepish. "Puzzled" don't know the regulations. "sheepish" know them but don't do it anyway. And these are H&S professionals, managing sites of up to 4 000 employees ! The number 2 H&S person of the company was in the training. (N° 1 thinks he doesn't need my training. Hah !) N°2 looked sheepish. At least it pays for the appéretif (how do you spell that ?) (actually, it goes on THEIR bill) Merv
